Recently you may have heard about the increased prevalence of shingles in the older American population. Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster, is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. There are an estimated 1 million cases of shingles in our country each year, about half of which are in individuals 60 years or older.
There is a shingles vaccine available now and the CDC recommends it for those ages 60 and up. If you have had shingles in the past you can still receive the vaccine to help avoid a recurrence of the virus.
For more information on the shingles vaccine and if it is right for you, talk to your doctor.
