As you are likely aware, Anthem revealed earlier in the month they were the victim of cyber-attack. Anthem, a Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) company, operates in several states and insures an estimated 40 million people. Anthem has set up a toll-free number for current and former members to call with any questions at 877-263-7995 and a dedicated website with information at www.AnthemFacts.com. Anthem has also partnered with AllClear ID to offer 24 months of identity theft repair and credit monitoring services for current and former members (for former members back to 2004).
Even if you were not insured under Anthem, you might be affected by the data breach. How? If you are currently or were formerly enrolled in a BCBS company plan with National Blue Card PPO you might have received services from a local Anthem provider. It is important to note at this time the extent of the stolen data is unclear and Anthem along with the BCBS Association is still investigating.
Local BCBS companies have released statements regarding the attack:
We assure you that we take very seriously our responsibility to safeguard the member data that we store. That is why we use a comprehensive, multi-prong approach to data security, and routinely review and strengthen our processes, procedures, and technology.
Anthem said that current and former members who received care since 2004 in any of the locations where Anthem does business may have had information retained in the Anthem database that was cyber-attacked. The locations where Anthem does business include some or all of the following states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Independence members could be impacted if they received care in any of these locations in which Anthem does business. With Anthem, Independence is in the process of analyzing data about our members who may have been affected.
Please be assured that our teams are working around the clock to ensure we can provide accurate information as quickly as possible.
Some Horizon BCBSNJ members were impacted by the cyber attack into Anthem’s IT system because they live in or received health care services in areas that Anthem services.
Thirty-seven independent companies operate in various locations across the United States and Puerto Rico to form the Blue Cross and Blue Shield network. This network enables members to receive the same health insurance benefits for any medical care they may need while living or traveling within the coverage areas of any other Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield company. Horizon BCBSNJ offers integrated medical, dental, vision and prescription drug plans. Contact your sales executive today to learn more.
In those instances, the member’s medical claim is sent, on their behalf, from the Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield company that received it to the local Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield company that maintains the member’s health care plan. This process ensures that the member’s claim is processed based on their personal benefit plan, while receiving the discounts agreed upon between the provider and the Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield company that received it while the member was living or traveling outside of the Blue Cross and/or Blue Shield company’s coverage area.
Therefore, if a member received care in any of the Anthem locations (listed below) within the past 10 years, the member’s claims experience may have been retained in Anthem’s database.
CareFirst has been made aware by Anthem (like CareFirst, a Blue Cross Blue Shield company) of a cyber-attack on Anthem’s information technology system and a resulting data breach. It is unknown at this time the extent to which the data breach may affect members of other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.
CareFirst is working with Anthem and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as the breach is investigated, and will provide information as warranted about the breach and any impact on CareFirst members.
Further information about the data breach may be found at Anthem's site.
If you were affected by the Anthem data breach, your insuring BCBS company will contact you. To check your local BCBS response to anthem contact member services or go to their website.
