Horizon Healthy U and the Fight Against Childhood Obesity
May 13, 2015
Over the past several years, the Horizon Foundation and New Jersey YMCAs have partnered together in the fight against childhood obesity. A joint effort, Healthy U, is a program designed to teach children ages 3-13 about healthy eating, nutrition and exercise. In addition, the program helps teach parents ways to be more involved in helping their children live and healthy lifestyle.
The program, which uses the Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) curriculum, reaches children in preschool, aftercare and elementary schools at 480 YMCA locations and 50 public schools. The program approaches each different segment of children with age appropriate activities and lessons. The program strives to show children that you can exercise and be active while playing and having fun. In addition, learning about gardening and healthy eating can teach children lessons that can lead to a positive lifelong relationship with food.
