As we enter fall, it is time for flu vaccines. The vaccine comes in two forms:
Flu shot: For those 6 months and older.
Nasal flu spray: Aetna covers the spray approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The spray is for non pregnant, healthy people ages 2 to 49.
Adults need only one dose of the flu vaccine. Children under 9 who have never had the flu vaccine should have two doses at least four weeks apart.
Who should get a flu vaccine? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone 6 months and older get the flu vaccine. It is very important for people at higher risk to get the flu vaccine. This includes health care workers and caregivers of children younger than 6 months.
